How To Dress for a Hostess Job
A hostess represents brands and companies at events or fairs, which is her outfit and styling should be on point. As a hostess agency, we have put together a little guide for you to orientate yourself on in order to dress appropriately.
#Outer Appearance – Dress To Impress!
Anyone who has ever been to a fair knows that fair hostesses and hosts are usually young and very attractive. However, there is more to an appealing appearance than age and genetics of a person. Whether it’s the hair and make-up or the jewellery and clothing: There are many things you can do wrong! To make sure this doesn't happen to you, we have listed all the details you need to know:
You should either simply put your hair up or wear it open for a fair. A hostess job is not about attracting attention with your appearance, but rather about looking well-groomed. For a man it’s usually required to shave the beard. However, you should inform yourself beforehand, since the requirements are different from job to job. Just ask your booker or the client directly!
As a hostess you should not dig too deep into the paint box. A light make-up that emphasizes your eyes and/or lips is enough. Of course, there’s an exception to make, if the client requests a different type of make-up – but in most cases there are no explicit demands and you should go for a simple make-up which emphasizes your natural beauty. Remember: Your smile is the best thing you can wear on your face to be sympathetic and to score with your charisma.
As a fair hostess you should hold back with accessories. Striking bracelets, statement necklaces and huge earrings are not welcome. On the other hand, simple jewellery like pearl plugs, a plain ring or a thin necklace are totally fine.
Hands and fingernails should be clean, both for hosts and hostesses. Make sure that your fingernails are not too long and don’t paint them with bright colours. False nails should also be neutral and not too long.
You should also pay attention to small details such as clean shoes, tights without ladders and wholes (always take an extra pair with you, just in case!) and ironed clothing. All these guidelines are general tips for a hostess job. Usually the customer expresses further wishes and ideas about the appearance of his employees in a detailed briefing. Your task is then to adhere to the customer's specifications. If you can’t identify yourself with the required outfit and the customer's details, please let us know in advance. Right from the start you should be aware that as a hostess you need to be able to adapt.
#No-Go’s of Hostess Fashion
As a hostess, there are a few things you should keep in mind regarding your outfit. Often you are given a direction for the dress style or you even get a suitable outfit from the company itself. If this is not the case, there are a few no-go’s of hostess fashion that you should be aware of:
- Don't wear torn jeans
- Don't wear too revealing clothes
- Choose an outfit with more muted colours
- No dirty clothes / shoes
- No unironed shirts / blouses
